We got introduced to Chromecast in 2014 and traditionally, Chromecast streams with the use of Wifi. Before answering whether you can use Chromecast without wifi, let’s learn some basics about Chromecast

What is Chromecast?

Chromecast is a device developed by Google which can be connected to any display with an HDMI port, this includes HDTVs and projectors.  With Chromecast connected to the TV or projector, you can stream movies from online streaming sites such as Netflix, YouTube and Hulu among others.

Chromecast also allows the user to mirror their laptops, tablets and mobiles to the TV screen. Chromecast can be operated by an application on the device you want to stream from or it can be controlled by your laptops/tablets Chromecast extension.

Where does the “cast” refer to?

The word cast refers to the act of streaming or mirroring using Chromecast. You are casting content from your device to the TV screen, hence the name Chromecast.

How does it work?

To connect any device to the Chromecast device, the device needs to use either an Android or iOS operating system.  The first step is installing the cast extension on your respective mobile/laptop and then searching for a Chromecast dongle that you want to connect. The name of the dongle will be shown once it’s discovered by your computer. Thereafter, you will be required to enter a four-digit number on your TV screen in order to establish a connection. Once the device is connected, it will automatically connect when Chromecast detects the presence of the device.

can you use Chromecast without wifi?

In the event that you don’t have wifi or it’s not available, you can still use Chromecast as long as your computer/smartphone is connected to a power source. This will allow you to cast your screen on the TV without an internet connection.

Can Chromecast stream videos even when it is turned off?

No! Your Chromecast will not be able to stream when it is turned off. Chromecast can only stream or mirror when it’s connected to a power supply and wifi. When you stop using the Chromecast, make sure that you turn it off in order to save power; however, your computer/smartphone should remain turned on when streaming with Chromecast.

Is there a difference between using Chromecast with and without the use of wifi?

Yes! if you stream via Wifi, you can connect to one device at a time. If your Chromecast does not have an active wifi connection, then your mobile/laptop or TV will be able to connect to it. You can even mirror more than 2 devices at a time without having wifi.

can you use Chromecast without wifi?

Yes, as long as you have a power supply and the mobile/laptop or TV remains on, you can cast your screen via Chromecast regardless of whether it’s connected to an active wifi network or not. The only limitation then will be the power supply and the number of devices that can connect to your Chromecast.

To sum up, you can use Chromecast without wifi if:

1) You have a power supply for the Chromecast device and;  2) Your mobile/laptop or TV that will be casting is always on and;  3) You do not exceed a total of 2 devices.

Mirror an Android device using Chromecast without a wifi connection

If you have Android KitKat 4.4.2 or later you can connect your phone to a Chromecast streaming stick. When you connected, you will be able to mirror your Android. Follow these steps to mirror an Android device using chromecast without wifi:

  1. Open Google Home – formerly Chromecast
  2. Tap on the hamburger menu
  3. From the menu, tap on Cast Screen/Audio,
  4. Choose your Chromecast device.

Using Chromecast without Wi-Fi

I have had situations where you are streaming on TV using Chromecast and for some reason, Chromecast is not connected to Wifi, you can use an Ethernet port of your router via an Ethernet adaptor for Chromecast.
